return | artist bio

Benton Spruance was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1904. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania School of Fine Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with Daniel Garber. While completing his studies he was awarded the Cresson traveling scholarship and had the opportunity to travel to France and study with Andre Lhote in Paris.

He exhibited his work at the Art Institute of Chicago, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, National Academy of Design, among other national print exhibitions. His work has been shown in many solo shows at galleries, museums, and universities around the country.  The Long Night and the New Day: lithographs by Benton Spruance was mounted at the Williams College Museum of Art in 2008.   His lithographs were included in the British Museum's American print exhibition, American Scene, 2009, and City Views, 2011, was organized by the LaSalle University Art Museum, Philadelphia.

He was a pioneer in developing color lithography techniques and was awarded numerous prizes, including a gold medal at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1946, the Medal for Distinguished Service to Art from the Philadelphia Sketch Club in 1962, and the Medal of Achievement from the Philadelphia Arts Alliance in 1965.
