From the late 1950s Hayter’s works very often explored the sensation of water. He was an avid swimmer and loved to fish. 1950s images of splashing, dripping water give way to more conceptual methods for drawing the appearance of light on the rippling surface of the water. While not an observed image, our large 1965 watercolor raises a question of point of view, perhaps from under the surface.
