The power of color in painting was something Jean Morrison deeply understood and remained a reoccurring theme throughout her career. Industrial Landscape was made during her time living in St. Louis, and one can see the hint of factories and buildings in the geometric elements and abstract structures which dance across the saturated surface of the painting. With a lifelong interest in theater and performance, her use of color is dramatic and bold. In her last year of life, when asked what began her interest in art, she answered, “Actually, I wanted to be a Fire Chief as a child. I suppose that has something to do with painting because I enjoyed those bright red trucks that we had in those days. They were such incredible reds!” Her connection to color remained the primary source of her inspiration up until the very end.
