Modern Drawings: American & European, 1930-1982

April 8 - June 8, 2020 Online Exhibitions

It gives us great pleasure to share with you our very first online exhibition, Modern Drawings. Works on paper are the core of what we know and love best. The present selection begins and ends with masterful works by the highly influential Stanley William Hayter. Hayter is the catalyst who connects many of the artists whose works we share here. Philadelphians Dox Thrash, Michael Gallagher, Jean Franksen, Sam Brown, Benton Spruance, and Morris Blackburn knew Hayter through his 1940s print workshops at Philadelphia’s Print Club (now Print Center). Paul Keene and Larry Day were long time friends from the time they made the drawings included here while Keene befriended Hayter while he was in Paris on the GI Bill and showing at Gallerie Huit. Beauford Delaney and Gail Singer also knew Hayter in Paris. James Goetz, Fred Becker, Jean Morrison worked very closely with Hayter at Atelier 17 in New York, while William Fett befriended both Fred Becker and Hayter in the 1940s. Helen Phillips of course, was married to Hayter from 1940 to 1970.

We delight in the range of approaches and the variety of responses to materials exploited in these works. Each demonstrates a practice that runs parallel to other media, whether printmaking, sculpture or painting. While we would like nothing better than to look at these works with you first hand, the opportunity to bring images of these works to you for viewing at your convenience also has great appeal.

We hope you enjoy and we hope you’ll let us know if we can provide further information and pricing.
