Blackburn made regular visits to Gloucester MA for painting trips and produced a rich body of work from 1946 through the mid-1950s. Gloucester Harbor shows him pushing the formal structure beyond what he observed and the heavy black lines and flat color shapes were later used to create his completely non-objective color screenprint from 1950, Cloud Planes.
