Orchestration Study is a large graphite and color pencil drawing that is strongly related to Blackburn’s 1947 color screenprint, Orchestration. The idea of music as a subject came from a commission Blackburn executed as an advertisement for the Capeheart Radio company. Capehart hired artists to make paintings in response to a musical composition. Blackburn chose Aaron Copeland’s 1944 composition for ballet, Appalachian Spring.
