Trenton Doyle Hancock has become internationally known for his fantastic, invented narratives. Comic book figures and superheroes are a powerful source of inspiration along with the action figure toys he treasured as a child and continues to collect. Trenton draws, paints, sculpts, and makes prints inventing narratives populated by characters representing his alter egos and heroes with a playful, personal mythology that explores good and evil, religion, authority, and race. In 2019 he created his largest installation to date, which was commissioned by MASS MoCA.
The Days of Excess is an x-ray view of a comic book artist's idea of the internal organs of a large, fleshy figure. Spit bite aquatint is paired with layers of a many-colored screen print to combine the high and low aspects of Trenton's vision.
