Oak in the Night employs a very large and beautifully executed spit-bite aquatint as its base. Brush marks and drips in black and grey tones create an evocative and dreamy mood for the landscape, distinct in the two river scenes and the leafless tree that dominates the composition. Rectangles of green and black velvet create an overall structure set against the flowing strokes and drips. The oak tree is symbolic of cosmic wisdom and strength and surrounds an antique photo of a young man dressed for travel in an overcoat, tie, and pork-pie hat.
