Stanley Whitney’s set of eight large etchings are masterful achievements, demonstrating a broad range of intaglio technique. Limiting the series to black ink allows Whitney to explore a specific sense of drama between light and lack of light in these notational works. A loose grid has been the hallmark of Whitney’s painting practice for some fifteen years, and the bright, fluid color of his canvases is not at all missed. Distinctive layers of aquatint create deep tones in the four darker compositions while the white of the paper radiates light in the loose structures of the four light compositions. Only a highly seasoned artist would find himself at home creating new gestures with etched metal and exploiting his abstract language at such a high level.
