Bob Thompson made a remarkable impact in his short yet prolific life. Comfortably working in a neo-expressionist figurative style, he carved out a highly respected position for himself in modern art, mostly by bucking the trends of the day. Our gouache and crayon drawing, Reflections from 1963, is one version of a motif he revisited many times, a common practice for him. Taking on European art history and Renaissance masters, Piero Della Francesco, in particular, Thompson aligns himself with a tradition that long excluded Black artists.
