Keith Haring emerged in the late 1970s as a street artist who found fame and acceptance within the

mainstream New York art world. We have a printed menu from a banquet in his honor, with his name listed at the top and his co-honoree, French painter Francoise Boisrond at the Beau-Rivage Palace in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The tastefully lettered menu feels incongruous with Haring's street art style, and he's transformed the

sheet drawing upon it a large penis topped with his iconic crawling baby. The drawing is signed by

circling the artist's printed name and adding "me," along with an arrow pointing to the combined

baby/penis image. Haring unabashedly celebrated his life, that of a gay man who created clear and

simple symbols for his message, a method perfectly aligned to express himself without apology.
