Terry Haass established her mature style during the 1940s while working in New York City at the Art Students League and then Atelier 17, where she later became one of the managing artists. She continued to develop a distinctive visual language of gestural abstraction at Atelier Lacourière-Frélaut in Paris. Strong color and movement are hallmarks of her paintings on paper.
