Delaney is unique among 20th Century masters in that he is recognized for figurative works as well as abstractions. Untitled (1969) shows a more figurative form of expression. This bold black form outlined by the white of the paper dances and swirls against an orange ground. Delaney was resourceful and only used what was needed to create this striking image. By emphasizing the physical, material nature of the paint we connect to this piece through the process in which it was made as well as where it may take us.
