Our Stories: African American Prints and Drawings can be seen through May 18, 2014.
This exhibition is drawn from works in the permanent collection at CMA that reflect African American Cultural Heritage. The museum’s Cleveland Art magazine states, “African American history, racial pride, the effects of political and social injustice and the struggle for freedom are some of the topics explored in powerful, compelling images.”
Included is a rare and important carborundum mezzotint by Philadelphian, Dox Thrash. Mr X (first version, Ittmann 79), 1937-38, was acquired by CMA from Dolan/Maxwell in 1996. It is a self portrait and made by Thrash soon after the carborundum mezzotint technique was developed at the Philadelphia WPA workshop. It gives us great pleasure Thrash’s work is included in this important exhibition and available to be discovered by new audiences.
