Thrash's Man Standing Tall (Pillar of Strength?) is a powerful image of a powerfully built man who is not young. He gazes down upon us with his sinuous and shapely legs in a wide stance. His muscled arms are held wide, and his posture is confrontational. He towers above the open landscape behind him, and an infinite and spacious sky surrounds him. Level to his ankles, a scene in the distance emerges. Reclining figures, sunbathing, or picnicking is not clear. Does the main figure protect them or perhaps defy us to judge their activities?
