Studio Window is a study for a large canvas, one of three based on a large bouquet of flowers as seen

before a large window facing west in Keene's Bucks County studio. The paintings explore spatial issues of the hierarchy of what is seen inside and out of doors. Here Keene inverts the image with abstracted flowers almost flattened to the same plane as the window, a splendid alternative to the spatial problem the artist set for himself. Working on paper supported Paul Keene's mantra as an educator, and he often repeated to his students, "draw, draw, draw." Paul drew constantly, and Landscape 1964 is one of four very fine drawings we've included here to show his ability to stretch and challenge himself as an artist. Soft, fluid brush strokes and a reduced palette allow light and atmosphere to hold status over specific landmarks or the descriptive rendering of land and sky. Feeling is first.
