shows him working to find the best formal solution to the portraits required. A single head is re-drawn four times, each with alterations in an effort to set down a proper likeness. The fifth head seems to have satisfied Keene directly, making this an exceptionally fine work that calls to mind the Dutch Golden Age portraits by Hals and Rembrandt.
