Thrash’s beautifully realized still life speaks to his own time on the vaudeville stage. Vaudeville grew out of minstrelsy, a form of traveling entertainment that evolved from Thomas Rice’s 1928 blackface character, Jim Crow. In the nineteenth century, a minstrel band included bone castanets and a tambourine. Black performers began parodying blackface performers and after the Civil War developed their own traveling shows. White gloves were part of a man’s vaudeville costume.
