About Face brings together portraits by Adrian Armstrong, Robert Blackburn, Harry Brodsky, Barbara Bullock, Elizabeth Catlett, Lynne Clibanoff, Dexter Davis, David Hockney, LaToya Hobbs, Marianne Greenwood, Dindga McCannon, Malcolm Myers, Jean Morrison, Betye Saar, Paul Keene, G. Ralph Smith, Paul Travis, Dox Thrash, Charles White, Walter Williams, and Ben Wigfall. Created across generations and in a range of media, these works reflect the richness, resilience, and complexity of the American experience. Presented in recognition of Juneteenth, Pride Month, and the 250th anniversary of the United States, the exhibition considers portraiture as an enduring expression of identity, dignity, and belonging—reminding us that every face tells a story, and every story contributes to our shared history.
The exhibition takes inspiration from Langston Hughes's poem We're All in the Telephone Book, in which America becomes a great directory of names with "no priority." Portraiture functions in much the same way. Each face occupies its own place, distinct yet equal, reminding us that the American experience is composed of countless individual lives and identities.
As Dolan/Maxwell begins a new chapter in our Germantown gallery, About Face inaugurates this new space while reaffirming our belief that art can foster recognition, empathy, and a more expansive understanding of our shared humanity.
