We are excited to return to Cleveland for the excellent Fine Print Fair, which is presented by the Print Club of Cleveland, an affiliate of the Cleveland Museum of Art. The venue is the superb Ames Family Atrium--the very heart of the museum. Along with new Contemporary works, we will present Picasso Plus, a celebration of CMA's recent blockbuster Picasso exhibition.
Cleveland's splendid Picasso and Paper exhibition exposed the 20th Century master’s genius to new audiences. For the Print Fair we will pay homage to Picasso with prints and works on paper that show how artists responded to his innovations, including European and American works from the 1930s to the present. Many of our selections were created at Stanley William Hayter’s seminal workshop, Atelier 17. Hayter was part of the Surrealist movement and befriended Picasso when they collaborated on Solidarité, the 1937 portfolio organized by Hayter in support of the Spanish Republic during Spain’s civil war, which provoked Picasso's masterpiece, Guernica. Surrealism was largely a response to the horrors of war and we accept Picasso’s surrealist works without labeling him as such.
Following Picasso’s lead, numerous artists explored new techniques and ideas. We are pleased to present works by Fred Becker, Morris Blackburn, Bob Blackburn, Hayter, Lee Chesney, Minna Citron, Claude Clark, Pierre Courtin, Dexter Davis, Oscar Dominguez, Werner Drewes, William Fett, Adolph Gottlieb, Alain La Bourdonnaye, Terry Haass, Jacques Hérold, Fanny Hillsmith, Jerome Kaplan, Mauricio Lasansky, Samella Lewis, Jacques Lipchitz, Andre Masson, Jean Morrison, Gabor Peterdi, Helen Phillips, Charles Quest, Andre Racz, Abraham Rainer, Judith Rothschild, David Ruff, Alfred Russell, Gustave Singer, Dox Thrash, Anne Weinholdt, and Enrique Zañartu.
Additionally, we will show a compelling selection of contemporary works by Mel Edwards, Emily Mason, Beauford Delaney, LaToya Hobbs, Dindga McCannon, Lorna Blaine Halper, Steven Ford, Takesada Matsutani, Cheryl Warrick, Amze Emmons, Robert Motherwell, Susan Rothenberg, and Ben Wigfall.
